A side trip to Houtong Cat Village is definitely a must for all cat lovers visiting Taiwan. Houtong was originally a mining town built in the Japanese era but when the 90s rolled in, coal industry activities ended and the population began to decline. The abundance of felines started in 2008 when a local named Peggy Chien along with volunteers began to look after stray cats in the area. They posted photos online and pretty soon word got around that there was a “cat village” an hour away from Taipei. Make sure you visit on a warm day so most of the fur babies are out and about!
