Flight Cancellations for November 2018 as NAIA Upgrades its Radar System

Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) cancels a number of domestic and international flights mid-November as the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) transitions from the old radar system to a more enhanced navigational system.

The old Manila’s Autonomous Cruise Control radar’s (ACC) limited capacity will be transferred to the enhanced Communications, Navigation, Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) system which can cover the whole country. This move aims to give way to a safer and more efficient air travel, as well as better air traffic and airspace management in the country.

At least four flights per hour will be canceled and reduced from the NAIA’s usual 40 each hour. This will affect flights starting on the 12^th of November to the 22^nd. However, it is up to the airlines’ discretion as to which flights to cancel.

Cebu Pacific’s affected passengers have already been notified of the schedule changes and the options they may avail of:

• Rebook flights for travel within 30 days from original departure date;
• Place the cost of the ticket in a Travel Fund for future use;
• Get a full refund.

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines has advised their affected passengers to check the status of their flights as early as 48 hours before departure. They are also advising affected passengers to rebook their flights within thirty days from original travel date; rebooking fees will be waived. Other available options are refunding and rerouting. Affected passengers may call (+632) 855 – 8888 for the rebooking/ refunding/rerouting of their flights.

The CAAP wishes to advise the public that this necessary measure is only temporary and will be effective for a short period to ensure a smooth transition and cut over process from the old radar system to a more enhanced air navigation system. This new system will provide a safer and more efficient air travel that will ultimately inure to the benefit of all for the flying public.
