Surigao del Norte’s Bucas Grande Islands Are Open Again for Tourism
They're just off the coast of Siargao!

We’re pretty much sure you’ve heard of Siargao, named as the best island in the world in 2017. But just across this world-renowned group of islands is another set of beautifully scattered islets in Surigao del Norte. They are called Bucas Grande, almost similar to Siargao but more remote, more rustic, and lesser-known.
After months of closure to tourism, they are finally reopening their doors to local travelers! Since tourists from NCR are still barred from entering Siargao now and even neighboring provinces in Visayas and Mindanao are having difficulties accessing the island, Bucas Grande is just right there to offer you an alternative.
What requirements should you accomplish?
Just like any other destination these days, Bucas Grande will be requiring its visitors to secure a permit. The Surigao del Norte Tourism and Culture Office strictly maintains a “no permit, no entry” policy.
But before you book that flight to Surigao Airport or hop on a ferry boat heading to the city port, you should first secure a paid three-day reservation in any of the accredited resorts in the islands. Check this official website and Facebook page of Surigao Del Norte’s tourism office for further information. We advise you to contact them first if they’re open for reservation before booking a flight.

Bucas Grande boasts of its limestone caves, rock formations, lakes, and even jellyfish sanctuaries. Yes, you heard that right, jellyfish! If you have a fear of jellyfish sting, you have nothing to worry about. There’s a place where you could find harmless jellyfish.

In Bubon Lake, you’ll find peace and serenity. It’s almost similar to Coron Lake in Palawan, only quieter and with fewer people. Can you imagine the things you could do while in solace in this lake? Kayak around the pristine lake or swim through its calm waters. If you need to contemplate in silence, this is a prime spot.

Perhaps the face of tourism in Bucas Grande islands is Sohoton Cove. Always being featured by local and foreign travel websites, you would think it may be easy to explore this group of green Chocolate Hills-looking islets. But it actually takes some effort to get there. From Siargao Island, you have to take a 3-hour boat ride going to Sohoton Cove. If you’re coming from Surigao City, the travel time could be halved. But nevertheless, all the effort you’d exert in going here would be rightfully rewarded.
