PSA: Sale of Japan’s Suica and PASMO Cards are Currently Suspended

But certain cards are still available for tourists.

When in Japan, one of the best things you can purchase are IC cards (imminently convenient or charge-and-tap transit cards) like Suica and PASMO. These are used not only for transportation but also for convenience store purchases, dining, and even in vending machines. However, sales of these cards have been temporarily suspended beginning August 2, 2023. Here’s why:

Ongoing global shortage

Due to an ongoing semiconductor shortage, PASMO Co announced the suspension of both non-personalized and personalized Suica and PASMO cards beginning August 2, 2023. This is to ensure that the company has enough stock required to issue commuter passes and reissue lost cards.

As of this writing, there is no information available on when these cards will be available for sale again.

Don’t fret, travelers

Tourists can still buy certain non-personalized PASMO cards, such as Special PASMO Passes and PASMO Bus Commuter Passes, and non-personalized and personalized Suica cards.

Where can I purchase Welcome Suica IC cards?

Welcome Suica IC cards for short-term visitors traveling to Japan from overseas will be available in limited quantities and at limited locations:

JR East Travel Service Centers at Narita Airport Station, Narita Airport Terminal 2,3 Station, and Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Station
Welcome Suica vending machines at Narita Airport Station, Narita Airport Terminal 2,3 Station and Haneda Airport Terminal 2 Station and Haneda Airport Terminal 3 Stations
