The zelkova trees lining Omotesando will be decked with almost a million LED light bulbs for the Omotesando Illumination (November 30 to December 25). It’s one of the most famous illuminations in Japan.

During the New Year’s Eve, some Japanese might spend it on temples and yet others, including tourists, are found in the city squares during countdown. Shibuya, known for its bustling nightlife, also hosts a countdown to the New Year. The Tokyo Tower has its own countdown and changes color and date display during midnight.
