Don’t Give Tips at Restaurants

Leaving tips at Japanese restaurants is considered as an insult. This is because they take pride in giving good service so their hospitality is free of charge. A thank you is enough to show that you’re grateful for their good service.
Be quiet on trains
Don’t play loud music or talk to someone on the phone while boarding a train. This is because many commuters use their time on the train to catch some sleep. So if you need to answer a very important call, it’s better to lower your voice or ask if they can call back later.
Don’t leave leftovers
Always order food that you think you can finish because having leftover food insults not only your host, but also the people who worked hard for you to be able to eat.
Learn Basic Japanese
Learning simple phrases can help you go around Japan. Since most Japanese people can’t really speak English, it’s better to learn some basic Japanese words. The locals will also appreciate the effort you put into communicating with them!
Don’t Jaywalk
Rules are strictly followed by Japanese citizens which is why you should never jaywalk. Also, always wait for the green light before you cross the street. Remember that no matter how much you’re in a rush, it’s always a must to follow a county’s rules.
Know how to properly use chopsticks
Remember these basic rules about how to eat with chopsticks:
- Don’t stick your chopsticks upright in your rice bowl
- Don’t pass food with your chopsticks
- Don’t rub your chopsticks together
