What to cook
Contrary to what you might think, canned goods aren’t the only food you can easily cook at camp.
Eli typically cooks egg omelet and bacon for breakfast, fried pork barbecue for lunch and sinigang/bulalo for dinner. Nic also suggests pasta for hassle-free preparation. Basically anything you can barbecue or fry is good; just make sure to always pre-cook before camping to avoid spoilage, and to choose three- to five-ingredient recipes.
How to Protect Yourself
- For insects: bring topical ointments and repellents
- For illnesses: always bring your medications (especially for your allergies). Switch to an active lifestyle and consistently workout for metabolism in preparation for your hike
- For possible wildlife: stay attentive and alert during camp-outs, although there’s low possibility of encountering wildlife at established trails. Eat your food far from your tent too.
- For weather: cover exposed skin, and always double-waterproof your belongings
Always think ahead and anticipate worst case scenarios, but don’t panic over them! And remember, you’re probably doing much more harm to the environment than the environment is doing harm to you.
Other Tips to Enjoy Your First Camp-out
- Try out your equipment prior to leaving home to avoid potential problems during the camp itself.
- Always monitor the weather and check forecasts.
- As usual, start with an easy climb especially if your skill and fitness levels are low.
- Work out and do cardio training at least two to three days prior to climbing.
- Join an outdoor group to learn about camping survival skills so you’re better educated and prepared for future hikes.
- Always listen to your guide, or go with someone who isn’t a beginner climber.
- Be genuinely excited about the trip! No matter how difficult or tiring it will get, as long as you’re having fun it will all be worth it in the end.
