At first glance, these bizarre sand dunes in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park in Brazil’s Maranhão state may look like a desert, but the area actually receives plenty amount of rain than a typical desert. The area can collect more than 50 inches of rain per year, and this is what makes up the park’s pools. A sheet of rock concealed beneath the sand helps the water stop from percolating.
