South Korea Day Trip: Must-Visit K-Drama Filming Locations in Suwon

Explore Suwon, one filming location at a time.

Seoul is already a treasure trove of locations we’ve seen in our fave dramas and movies, but if you’ve been a fan of recent hits, Suwon is the day trip worth adding to your itinerary. Here are some iconic filming locations in Suwon and exactly where you can find them:

Queen of Tears: Irwon Botanic Garden/Suwon Arboretum Irwol

Location: 61 Irwol-ro, Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do

@jay.onthe.way Another Queen of Tears filming location I visited is the Irwol Botanical Garden, located in Suwon, where Hae In lied to Hyun Woo about a raccoon hiding there named Young Suk while they walk throughout the the garden. The Suwon Arboretum Irwol has a diverse collection of plants and ecological research. It offers visitors an immersive experience in various themed gardens, including wetlands, forests, and medicinal herb gardens. If you’re a plant lover, get ready to fall in love in this indoor garden, the same way Hong Hae In was beginning to fall in love with Baek Hyun Woo in Queen of Tears. This was the garden where Hae In lied about having a raccoon named “Young-suk” in their office, which Hyun Woo kept calling for every time he visited.

Suwon Arboterum Irwol is home to a variety of gardens where you’ll find different plant species. Visitors can also join plant workshops, avail of guided tours, and do ecological activities here.

Twenty-Five Twenty-One: Paldamun Gate, Suwon Hwaseong Fortress

Location: 320-2 Yeonghwa-dong, Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do

Hwaseong Fortress is Suwon’s most popular destination, and one of its gates is seen in a couple of episodes from Twenty-Five Twenty-One. In the drama, you might remember that the Paldamun Gate is a bus stop, but it’s not in real life.

For history buffs, the fortress is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the Joseon King Jeongjo moved his father’s remains. The area boasts a 6-kilometer wall with four gates.

Travel tip: Visit during spring to recreate the beautiful bus scene!

Extraordinary Atty. Woo: Woo Young Kimbap Shop/Kajaguruma

Location: 61 Sinpung-ro 23beon-gil, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea

For lunch, head to Kajaguruma, a small Japanese restaurant that became the gimbap restaurant where Atty. Woo’s father works. They serve Japanese fare like omurice and salmon, but K-drama fans can also treat themselves to gimbap to complete the drama moment. They probably added it to the menu to cater to the fans!

Lovely Runner: Im-Sol’s House/Mong Ted Cafe

Location: 14 Hwaseomun-ro 48beon-gil, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do

Ready to scream “Sunjae-ya!” when you visit Mong Ted? This café is Im-Sol’s house in the drama Lovely Runner, and you can still spot the iconic yellow umbrella. Since the drama is still quite new, expect that there’s going to be a line for picture-taking, which is going to be worth it.

Mong Ted serves a variety of pastries, but salt bread seems to be their specialty.

Lovely Runner: Sunjae’s House

Location: 13 Hwaseomun-ro 48beon-gil, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do

While you’re in the neighborhood already, visit Sunjae’s House, which is just across from the café.

Our Beloved Summer: Choi Woong’s House/Haenggung Party

Location: 09-1 Jangan-dong, Palda-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do

Choi Woong’s cozy house (which doubles as his studio), which is surrounded by a garden in the drama Our Beloved Summer, was actually a cafe in real life.

The cafe is near the Hwaesong Fortress, but you can’t include this spot in your café list in the area, as it has already closed.

Our Beloved Summer: Kook Yeon-soo’s House/Jidong Mural Village

Location: 75-5 Changnyongmun-ro, Paldal-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do

Kook Yeon-soo’s house is also in Suwon. You can find the iconic green gate in the Jidong Mural Village, so you’re in for a treat. The village is home to a six-kilometer road with seven mural themes. Imagine taking a long walk around and stopping to take photos of the interesting art you’ll see.

The Uncanny Counter: Eonni’s Noodle Shop

The counters’ hideout, Eonni’s Noodle Shop, doesn’t serve noodles IRL. Instead, it’s a quaint cafe called Haenggong Mansion. It’s located in a neighborhood filled with various coffee shops, so you might want to add it to your itinerary if you also plan on going cafe hopping.

Unfortunately, Haenggung Mansion is currently closed.

BONUS:

Starfield Library Suwon

Location: 175 Suseong-ro, Jangan-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi

You might have already included the original Starfield Library in Coex Mall in Gangnam, Seoul, to take the iconic escalator photos. Still, the iconic library now has another branch in Suwon. The Starfield Library in Suwon is bigger: it spans four floors and has bookshelves with a height of 22 meters.

There are plenty of cozy spots for reading or people-watching, including a Vinyl Café where you can choose from a collection of 10,000 LPs. The entrance fee already includes a free drink!

If you’re visiting with kids, the library also has a section for them.

A day trip to Suwon is totally doable, depending on the places you want to visit or the activities you want to try. Getting there is easy, too; it’s just a 35-minute train ride from Seoul.
