I’m Drunk, I Love You

A local film by JP Habac, IDILY tells the story of Carson (Maja Salvador) who is hopelessly in love with her best friend Dio (Paulo Avelino) and is resolute on finally moving on from her seven-year crush before their college graduation. But days before they march, Dio “kidnaps” Carson and brings her all the way to La Union where they must finally decide where their friendship stands. Beyond the very “feelsy” story, IDILY sparks renewed interest within us for La Union, its beaches and bagnet, and makes us crave a six-hour road trip with our best friend (or crush), too.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller) is all of us — too afraid to get out of our comfort zones and yet eager to escape the humdrum of our lives. In this film, we follow Mitty as he embarks on an adventure of his lifetime to the unexplored treasures of Iceland, Greenland, and the Himalayas in search for a photojournalist to save his own job. In the process, we are moved by the transition he experiences from being a person that has never made any significant mark with his life to being someone with stories to tell that are beyond anything he could have ever imagined. This film will make you want to explore the world without the reassurance of ever returning home.

A Map for Saturday

“On a trip around the world, every day feels like Saturday,” or so the film says. This documentary follows a group of individuals who had once had all they could ever need for a comfortable life but traded them all for a taste of adventure. And these backpackers aren’t just wallowing in the luxuries of the world; in fact, they’re using this opportunity instead to help the less fortunate and to understand different cultures. If you’ve ever dreamed of backpacking to places and being enriched with unusual encounters and experiences, this documentary will inspire you to do just that.

Before Sunrise/Before Sunset/Before Midnight

This world-acclaimed three-part romance film gets us hooked on the development of Céline (Julie Delpy) and Jesse’s (Ethan Hawke) relationship over the course of almost two decades, beginning with their chance encounter on a train to Vienna, Austria where they spend the night getting acquainted with one another while taking in the sights and sounds of the city. Although a whirlwind romance like this isn’t likely to happen to everyone, it still gives us a bit of hope that our lives will change just because of a complete stranger on a vacation.
