It’s not a popular place for tourists to visit, although recently, it’s finding more visitors. Be one of the firsts to immerse in the local culture. Most locals are fishermen but they are descended from the artistic Pallavas, so you will find a lot of handicrafts, particularly stone craftsmanship. Because of the hustle and bustle of a city like Delhi, the people are more laid-back and very friendly towards tourists.

Mahabalipuram was once a busy port during the period of Pallava rule. It’s hard to imagine that now, but its great temples must have been flooded by devotees during their heyday — quite different from the peaceful, seaside town it is today.
