The family of Mikhail Pavlovich and Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna owned the palace and subsequently passed it on to their heirs until their grandchildren. Emperor Nicolas II bought the property in the 1890s and turned it into a museum. Carlo Rossi was the chief architect and designer of the complex. He employed the neo-classical style when construction started in 1819.
