The palace was originally for Count Grigory Orlov for his loyalty to Catherine the Great in her bid to overthrow her husband. As his reward, he got the palace, however, as the years went on his influence waned and he eventually fell out of favor with the empress. When the count died, Catherine bought it from his family and gave it to one of her grandsons.
