There’s a holiday for Korean couples on the 14th day of each month, except on the 14th of April, because, hey, single people deserve a special day for their poor hearts too, don’t they? Enter Black Day, the perfect time to publicize the fact that you’re single by eating the sticky black bean noodle dish jjajangmyeon. The custom may be embarrassing for many, especially in a country like South Korea, where having a partner is a big deal. But some singletons take Black Day as an opportunity to boast their independence and might even be joined by their also-single friends to celebrate the joys of singlehood.
