This UNESCO-listed site is full of history spanning four centuries. Tokugawa Ieyasu called it home upon its construction in 1603. Iemitsu, his descendant, finished the palace buildings two decades after. Today, it remains a fine example of feudal epoch palace design.

Access: The entrance is near Nijojo-mae Station on the Tozai Subway Line. You can also take buses 101, 50 or 9 from Kyoto Station.
Fees: JPY600 for the entrance and an extra JPY400 for the Ninomaru Palace.
