Chanderi is a historic town in Madhya Pradesh enveloped by forested hills and lakes. The history of Chanderi goes back to the 11th century. It is said that the population peaked to hundreds of thousands, being connected to the Silk Road by a highway. During the British rule in the 19th century, Chanderi became an off-highway town, therefore losing much of its trade presence – and eventually, a large number of its population. Today, Chanderi remains a ‘major center of Jain culture’ and one of the most historic towns in India.
