5 New Spots to Check Out in La Union

Perfect for the long weekend.

We all know that La Union is the place to surf, eat, chill, repeat. Known for its growing selection of exciting food spots and accommodations, LU has started to feel like a seaside Poblacion, a gentrified piece of surf paradise.  LU has definitely jumped to the top of the list for go-to weekend destinations — whether you’re going with friends, or all by your lonesome.

On your next trip, check out these new hangout places and accommodations.

Vessel Hostel

This Instagram-worthy hostel has more than what meets the eye. The place is made up of re-purposed shipping containers put together to create a climate-friendly and comfortable space that looks good, too. It’s definitely one of the coolest accommodations we know!

The hostel has a modern aesthetic and efficient design, allowing natural light to flood the interiors. Their roof deck is a great place to be, you’d want to wake up every morning to its breathtaking view of the sea. It’s surely a perfect home away from home.

You don’t need to fly to Korea to relive your Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo feels, there’s a local chicken place inspired from the drama that’s just one bus away from Manila! Aside from their tasty, WFKBJ-inspired chicken flavors, Bok Chicken LU’s menu also includes Korean favorites like ramen and samgyeopsal. Pair them with a cold bottle of soju and you’ll instantly feel that Korean drama vibe.

Ol’ Pub

Ol Pub has that rustic and youthful ambiance that feels so inviting especially after a whole day’s surfing. They just opened this year, but this laid-back food place designed with vintage items has quickly become a favorite of both locals and tourists alike.

One of the reasons, most likely, are the unique Pinoy twists they incorporate into their menu which includes pizzas, sausages, salads and other pub favorites. Their cocktails and drinks are great conversation starters, so you know it’s going to be a night to remember at this good Ol’ Pub.

The Coffee Library

Coffee junkies can find their new happy place in the form of The Coffee Library — arguably one the best spots to visit in LU. It’s literally a “library of coffee” with its wide array of options that come from different parts of the world.

Their bestsellers include authentic Vietnamese coffee like the famous Egg Coffee, which you can pair with classic Vietnamese delights like the Pho Bo and Pho Ga. For those who crave local flavors, they also offer classic Pinoy favorites like the Crispy Pork Kare-Kare guaranteed to satisfy your taste buds. Overall, it’s a great spot to read a good book or chill with friends before you grab your surfboards.

Choka Restaurant

Choka Restauran specializes in comfort food. Try their tasty Chicken Cordon Bleu or, fall in love with one of their bestsellers, the Chili Burger. If you’re up for a more extreme food adventure, their original Skyscraper — a half-foot tall burger filled with the mouthwatering combination of bacon, chicken-fillet, all-beef patty and more — is one to tick off your bucket list. They have a mini version if you want to start small, but who says we’re not up for the challenge? Have we mentioned they have huge servings?
