When one thinks of the Cordillera region, the first thing that comes to mind is the patchwork of rice terraces, mountains and maybe even pine trees. On your first weekend, you can take the road less travelled and go to Apayao: a lowland province full of hidden waterfalls, lush forests and flowing rivers. Here you can explore the beautiful underground river, quite different from the one in Palawan since you’ll go hiking to the different chambers of the cave. The province is just a bus away from Manila, and you can hire trained boatmen and guides to maximize your Apayao experience (and know where the great photo spots are!)
